A panel discussion with classmates who chose to serve in the U.S. military. They will share stories of what they’ve learned as they fulfilled their roles in an organization that is so distinctively different than Harvard.  And they will welcome your questions.

Panelist Bios:

General John Hyten – received an Air Force ROTC scholarship to Harvard and has served as an active-duty officer since graduation in 1981, rising to the rank of 4 star General, 11th vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the nation’s second highest ranking military officer. 

Cecile Scoon – received a four year ROTC scholarship to Harvard, took an educational delay to attend UVA Law School, and then served four years in the US Air as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate at Tyndal AFB in the Florida Panhandle.  Cecile then entered the USAF reserves and retired as a major in 2005.

Frank Haluska – worked as a Mass General oncologist until 9/11, after which he joined the USAF.  As a member of the USAF reserves, in the 439 Airlift Wing at Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA, he was deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005 and completed his military career with the MA Air National Guard (2005-2020), retiring as a Colonel.

Andrew Burris – enlisted in the US Marine Corps 4/1/83, serving four years, rising to the rank of sergeant. Andy attended basic training at Paris Island, SC, followed by assignments at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center in Monterey, CA, Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX, and Kaneohe Bay, HI.  He was honorably discharged in 1987.

James Cremins (panel moderator) – received Army Health Professions Scholarship in 1983; while in the reserves during medical school (1983-1987), he served stints at Fort Belvoir, VA, Letterman AMC, San Francisco, CA, and Fitzsimons AMC, Aurora, CO.  He was part of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Iraq (10/1990 to 4/1991).  After 9 years of active duty, Jim was honorably discharged in 1996 with the rank of Major.
