Video Story Club: Thursdays, April 29 & May 13, 8‑9:30 pm EDT, followed by After-Party

Video Story Club‘s page at Brooklyn Live Jams.

Videos & lyrics from April 29.

Register here.  We will share our own stories while discussing stories in music videos. The music consists of live jams of original songs by singer-songwriters, hip hop artists, and poets, from the first five Concerts For Our Children’s Future at Bashner’s Brooklyn Jam & Salon, planned by Richard Bashner, featuring Chris Owens as music director/bandleader.

Story Club will intersperse seven original songs with breakouts and assemblies to share and discuss stories; followed by Q&A with the artists, and then an After-Party in Paris (starting at 9:30pm, at the HR1981 Sophya cafe).

This series was inspired by the Public Narrative approach of Harvard Professor Marshall Ganz, as applied in leadership training modules for the Harvard Alumni Association’s Initiatives on Storytelling and on Diversity and Inclusion, and in the Anti-Black Racism Working Group workshop series Using Public Narrative To Build Equitable And Inclusive Communities.

We will use the first two meetings (April 29 and May 13) for each of us to tell our “Story of Self”, so that we can get to know each other, build connections, and create a shared community.  We will discuss the songs and share our own related stories, on themes such as overcoming stress, supporting children, taking unexpected paths, and working together to achieve goals.

Later meetings will cover the next phases – the “Story of Us” and “Story of Now/Call-to-Action”.  We will watch videos of musical stories about working to overcome the many challenges that we and our children face; continue to tell our own stories related to the music videos; share them together; speak with the artists; and socialize at musical after-parties. Please join us!

FAQ about the Concerts For Our Children’s Future at Bashner’s Brooklyn Jam & Salon:

  • “Brooklyn” (or Paris) – where we recorded the first 90 songs, from 10/25/19 – 2/29/20.
  • “Jam” – songwriters jam with musicians (some they’ve just met), after brief rehearsals.
  • “Salon” – musical performances and conversations, in an intimate home setting.

I am very excited to share this wonderful music, and to work together on a program to adapt for many audiences, including alumni, college, high school, religious, fraternal, and activist groups.
